"Something From Nothing," an exhibition of photographs chronicling the early history of West Calaveras, will become a reality thanks to a $2,000 grant awarded the Society for the Preservation of West Calaveras History by the Calaveras Community Foundation. When completed, the traveling exhibit, and an accompanying brochure, will be available to schools, service clubs, selected businesses, other organizations and community events. The exhibition is scheduled to be completed and available by the end of September. Said SPWCH President Sal Manna: "The educational value and community pride it will spark for youth and adults, both new and long-time residents, make this one of the most important image-building efforts ever undertaken in West Calaveras." The SPWCH welcomes the contribution of vintage photographs as well as suggestions regarding potential venues for the exhibition.

Train Times 2008

Ok, this was a terrific event. I represented Rancho Calaveras Property Owners Association with a booth. We gave away duckies to small children that netted them with small fish nets.
It was a fabulous hit wtih the small children and the parents. There wasn't anything for small children to do otherwise. We were busy all day long with people coming by. We were able to informe many people about us and what we represent. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Soem items that needed to be addressed:
1) DOGS!!!! There were way too many dogs for an avent with small children walking around at their level. There needs to be a ban on dogs or if dogs are allowed the must be on a SHORT leash and the must be reponsible for the peeing on peoples tables and tablecloths and booths. I saw several dogs pee on venders booths.
2) The site either needs to be raked clean of rocks or much more gravel needs to be brought in to make the site level and safe. I saw a disabled child on crutches trip on the uneven rocks and fall flat on his face adn the child in a motorized wheel chair was having a difficult time on the rocks. I had a hard time walking because you never knew when a really larger rock was going to be in your path.
3) Smoking in booths when you are all crammed in next to each other. We had to ask the chain smokers in the booth next to us to put up the side walls on their pop-up to keep the smoke from saturating us. I was working with an elderly gentleman who does not need anything to add to his breathing problems. If I was selling a fabric item I would have been really pissed off to have it soak up the cigarrette smoke. There needs to be a smoking area set up away from the booths.
4) There needs to be a better sound system away from the music area. We could not hear any of the non-professional speakers on the north end of the building.
5) Ther needs to be more signs along the street to capture the attention of drivers by.
6) What if a table was set up with train themed stamps for small children to make postcards to have stamped and cancelled to send to family members.
